Seagull Childcare

Shaldon, South Devon

Background

In 1984, after completing ‘The Child and the Playgroup’ course at Torquay Technical College, during which I did work experience at a Montessori nursery school, my mother and I started a Pre-School based in our family home on The Green in Shaldon.

From 1992 I took on the roles of both manager and leader. I also studied for and achieved an NVQ Level 3 in Childcare and Education.

The Seagull Pre-School closed in 1997 after a highly successful run of just over thirteen years. After the closure I worked as a voluntary playgroup supervisor in the Bramble Children’s Special Ward based at Exeter Hospital. I also worked part-time at Trinity School, Teignmouth and at Decoy Nursery in Newton Abbot.

In 1997, a special class was set up at Shaldon Primary School for children with additional needs. I assisted the teacher in charge of the class, Liz Deane, with various tasks, both in-group teaching and on a one-to-one basis, and worked as a voluntary classroom assistant in Class 6. I also assisted with outdoor educational visits which included a trip to Wales.

I then applied for and got the position of Mealtime Assistant at the school – a job I have been doing for some years now. My role is to supervise the children while they are eating their lunch. I am also responsible for their welfare and safety during play.

My two Jack Russell dogs need plenty of walking but I also enjoy horse riding plus travelling and meeting people of different cultures. Visits to Madeira, Italy, Holland, Egypt and Morocco have all helped to develop projects for the children.

I’ve also taken care of foreign students, providing accommodation plus practical advice, while they were studying in Teignmouth.

I enjoy cooking so it was fun to introduce them to some good home-cooked English food but I also love trying out recipes from all over the world. I have worked as a volunteer at the Shaldon Tourist Information office and the Shaldon Wildlife Collection.
